McAfee School of Theology
The campus of The McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University is located in Atlanta, Georgia and offers an accredited curriculum of theological education for over 200 students. McAfee and the Institute for Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education at Care and Counseling Center of Georgia offer together a CPE program supported by Lilly Foundation, Inc which allows recent McAfee graduates to serve as pastoral residents for two years in a local church/parish setting. Every two years, four residents are chosen to participate in this parish-based program of Clinical Pastoral Education, earning two units of Level One CPE during the two years of their residencies. Insights gleaned from the residents’ experiences and their evaluations are supporting the development of a new model for CPE and addressing significant issues in first-time parish placements of seminary graduates. McAfee plans to compare the progress of the residents of the residents who participate in the parish-based CPE program with that of the residents who work with a ministry coach or supervisory pastor throughout the two-year residency, but do not participate in the CPE program.
