CPE at Atlanta Medical Center

Atlanta Medical Center is major downtown for profit medical center owned by Tenet Health Care. The hospital is a 450-bed general medical center that has a large array of services. These services include a Level II Tertiary Emergency Care Unit; 50 Intensive Care Unit beds for Adults, as well as a Neo-natal ICU. In addition to general medical and surgical needs, AMC serves the community by offering specialty services in a variety of areas such as oncology, labor and delivery, bariatric treatment, and two behavioral health units (one for the general population and one for geriatric patients) where Chaplains offer Spirituality groups. Recently, a Forensic Unit was opened to provide medical treatment for state and federal prisoners.

CPE has been a vital part of the medical center for the past 50 years. Originally the hospital was the Georgia Baptist Medical Center where Augustus Verdery started one of the first CPE programs in Atlanta and the state of Georgia. Therefore, this medical center has a rich history in the CPE movement and remains an active participant in the offering pastoral care to diverse population representing the inner city of Atlanta and its growing international identity. Students serve as members of the Trauma Team and attend traumatic admissions as a first priority. Each student is assigned a clinical area and provides on-call pastoral care services on a scheduled basis. CPE at AMC offers Intern part-time extended units and full-time summer units, as well as a full-time yearly Residency program.
